The second son of James Arthur and Clara Bell Woolard, born in Queens New York July 28 1947. During the time of my birth Mother told me she was very sick, with a bad kidney infection, which could have caused a possible miscarriage with me or it could have been fatal for Mom during my birthing. The Doctor told Mom, that she had to drink a lot of water to keep her kidneys flushed, that probably why even now I drink a lot of water. Thank God both Mom and I made it through those tough times of my birth. When I think about what Mom went through It make me feel like the scripture that reads about what Jabez went through because his mother bore him in pain as my mother did. So now I pray the same prayer that Jabez prayed that God would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory and let His hands be with me and keep me from evil, and truly God has blessed me all these years. I’m married to Peggy Ann Woolard, we have three sons Melvin Jr. Michael and Maurice.

The start of my singing happened when I was four yours old because of sickness with my tonsil. I had a tonsil infection in which they had to be removed at the age of four. My parent tell me I’ve been singing every since. Growing up in Queens Bridge Projects in New York has also encouraged me to sing. At the young age of fifteen and I also felt a calling on my life to preach. I preached for about a year, during that time as a teenager also became interested in talking to the girls. Now the problem with wanting to like girls during 1950 and 60 for young people in the Pentecostal church were told dating was a sin. So I stopped preaching to talk to the girls, but continued singing. Singing was in my blood because I come from a family of singer. In the Woolard Family Tree come many singers. It all started with my late Grand Mother Rebecca Woolard, my Fathers family, His two sisters Aunts Dorothy and Evelyn, two brothers Uncles Melvin namesake and Uncle Bro known as Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard. This singing tree has spread to my family and me. Three sons Melvin, Michael and Maurice all have the ability to sing. Matter of fact my middle son Michael has work and producers such as Leon Slyver a music legend and the well-known Teddy Riley. Now Michael group Natural Blend has a record deal with DreamWorks Record CD soon to be released. My Father was also in show business singing and dancing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem New York. So singing and dancing was in our blood and was what I loved doing which help keep my brothers and I busy with something positive to do and out of trouble.

Queens Bridge Projects was a Project that it was easy to get into trouble like so many of our fellow peers did. Many got caught up in selling and using drugs and alcohol some even went to jail. Thank God my brothers, sister and I escaped all of that instead Dad trained us to sing. This was four boys and one girl at that time Valerie, Joe, Ray, Errol and yours truly Melvin as gospel singers. We were known as the Woolard family Gospel Group. As we got older we stop singing as a family group myself, Ray and Joe started another group called the Holy Temple Kings, which was part of singing group in the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ we belonged too. Eventually I joined the Air Force and continued to singing. While station in the state of Maine at Loring Air Force Base I started a gospel group with two other Soldiers. Also while station at Ramey Air Force Base in the Puerto Rico I started another gospel group called the Brother In Christ. We sang at different outdoor stages events and churches throughout Puerto Rico. I would also sing solo gospel songs in English and Spanish every Sunday for this Puerto Rican Minister on his radio broadcast. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force I went back home to Queens Bridge Projects in New York. A few years later I married my beautiful wife Peggy. It wasn’t that many years after getting married that I accepted my calling back as a preacher this in a New Years Eve Church Service. As we worship the Lord that night, the Lord allow me to hear the voice of a dear friend and sister that I knew while station in Puerto Rico, name Clara Bowser. As she laid on her deathbed with cancer Clara said to me Melvin stay with the Lord. By hearing her voice in my spirit I said yes to God and accepted my calling back as a to preacher. I’ve been preaching every since.

I moved my family to Virginia Beach in 1983. I was also going back and forth to North Carolina to work with my Uncle Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard in the Ministry, which is in my wife hometown of Plymouth North Carolina. A few years later 1987 I step out as a Pastor, went under the Late Bishop Clarence L Sexton Sr. Who was the Overseer of the 2nd Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Brooklyn New York. After the passing of Bishop Clarence L. Sexton Sr. I continued to stay with 2nd Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Brooklyn New York. My brother in-law Supt. Clarence L. Sexton Jr. who is the son of the late Bishop Clarence L. Sexton Sr. was my inspiration to stay the 2nd Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. Singing has always been part of my ministry and what I love and will continue doing. I’ve also had the opportunity to sing on the many programs with national recording artists such as Rev F.C. Barnes, Little Willy and the Soul Stirrers The Pearly Gates and many other national groups I’ve also had the opportunity to sing for the National Elders Council Convention of Churches of God in Christ, Inc. I’ve been a Trumpet player for the COGIC Orchestra in Memphis, Tennessee for the sum of five years. My recording have been played on radio stations throughout the country
